UFC CHAMP COMING TO ABBOTSFORD

The upcoming MMA Expo scheduled for April 10 and 11 at the Tradex Convention Centre in Abbotsford is already possessed of an auspicious guest list including UFC standouts "Mr. International" Shonie Carter and "The Muscle Shark" Sean Sherk. However, I was just today able to help to add yet another HUGE name to the list while assisting Bushido Martial Arts Supply (bushido,ca) in getting a celebrity attendant for their booth. And so now it is my immense pleasure to announce that 3-time King of Pancrase and UFC Heavyweight Champion "El Guapo" Bas Rutten will be holding court at the Bushido booth during both days of the expo!

UFC 115 UPDATE

In light of the recent behind-the-scenes confusion regarding the sanctioning of professional MMA, I recently contacted Mr. Marc Ratner, the Vice President of Governmental and Regulatory Affairs for the UFC. I voiced my concerns over Vancouver's municipal government's ongoing liability concerns, which seem to be impeding the drafting of a proper set of guidelines for MMA promotion. Mr. Ratner was kind enough to get back to me almost immediately, stating that he is currently looking to schedule a date within the next ten days upon which he can personally come to Vancouver and meet with representatives of Vancouver City Council. This is good news, and hopefully an indicator that the red tape that's been bogging the sport of MMA down will soon be shredded to leave a clear road ahead for UFC 115 at GM Place.

GET WELL SOON, DENIS

It looks very likely that I'll be sitting beside Mauro Ranallo in the broadcast position once again for the upcoming Warrior-1 show in Montreal. One fight on that show that I was particularly looking forward to calling was the battle between Denis Kang and Lion's Den founding member Vernon "Tiger" White. However, Denis has now been replaced by Jason Macdonald, as he was forced to withdraw by a debilitating neck injury. I just got off the phone with Denis and he is describing the injury as a stinger that is causing pain and weakness in his neck and right arm. It's an encouraging sign that the symptoms are already starting to subside, and an MRI is scheduled for tomorrow to determine the full extent of the damage. I'm sure that I'm joined by many in wishing a speedy recovery and return to action for one of the best MMA fighters ever produced by the great white north!

ROCKY ROAD TOWARD UFC 115

It's 10:40 PM on Tuesday, March 2 and I just got home from a meeting of the Vancouver Athletic Commission, on whose guest list I was joined by North Vancouver Athletic Commission Chair Mike Pattenaude, and Assistant Director of Vancouver's Licenses and Animal Control division Tom Hammel. I was there to inquire about obtaining a professional MMA promoter's license on behalf of the Score Fighting Series, as well as to check on the status of the upcoming UFC event scheduled to be held at Vancouver's GM Place. To say that the meeting was a sobering affair would be understatement writ large.

In spite of Vancouver City Council's approval of a two-year trial period for MMA, I found out that there are still no regulations in place to promote the sport professionally within the city. The problem lies in the fact that the city is still expressing grave concerns about legal and financial liability, while movement toward a resolution of those concerns appears to have been extremely sluggish.

At one point, newly-elected VAC chair Mirko Mladenovic (a supporter of properly-sanctioned MMA) asked Mr. Hammel when the legal issues might be resolved, to which Mr. Hammel replied, "About two months" in a manner that indicated to me that it may be even longer. Paradoxically, Mr. Hammel also said that an MMA event could technically be held at Vancouver's PNE Fairgrounds, which have previously hosted major events by bodogFIGHT and Elite Fighting Championships, but added that such an event would be subject to the approval of the PNE board. That's an apparent dead-end, since that board has already issued flat refusals to Edmontion's Maximum Fighting Championships and eastern Canada's Elite-1, stating that they have no desire to host any MMA event on their premises. Hearing all that I damn near stopped breathing, since it would mean that unless something changes, and quickly, then our UFC event is already dead in the water.

I don't want to run around like Chicken Little screaming about the sky falling just yet, so for now I'm just going to hope that things start moving behind the scenes to expedite a return of pro MMA to a city that Olympic debt has left in dire need of new revenue sources. Otherwise, we may just lose the biggest MMA happening in Vancouver history, along with the badly-needed cash injection that goes with it.

HITMAN ROCKS THAILAND ONCE AGAIN

MASSIVE congratulations go out to Franco Kickboxing/Pankration's own Kenny "Hit Man" Tran, who extended his southeast-Asian undefeated streak to eight fights with a third-round KO last night in Thailand's famous Lumpinee Stadium. Lumpinee is one of Muay Thai's "major league" arenas and just to be invited to fight there is a huge accolade, but to walk out of it with a KO win under your belt is something that a fighter can be proud of until the day that they die. I cannot adequately express how proud I, Chris Franco, and everyone else at FKP are of Kenny, and I'm sure that this is a sign that 2010 is gonna be the break-out year for the Hit Man!!!

DAVE HOOK

For some reason the name "Dave Hook" popped into my head and prompted me to do an online search for the guy. Dave was a guy I hung out with occasionally in my hometown of Kitchener, Ontario. He was a natural clown with such instinctive comedic timing and delivery that he could have you laughing fit to piss yourself by simply reading you last night's sports scores. He also has the dubious honour of being a member of the "club" of standup comedians who would appear to have had their material plagiarized by Dane Cook. Dave's "Kool Aid" bit damn near made me suffocate from uncontrollable laughter, and I was not in the least happy to hear something almost identical (and not nearly as well-delivered) come from Cook years later.

Although he never stopped looking like a little kid, Dave was a tough little sumbitch, having trained in boxing for most of his life. In fact, his hands were so broken and gnarled from cracking the skulls of would-be-bullies that I was surprised he could still play his guitar!

Recently I heard that Dave had been diagnosed with brain cancer, and some of the entries following the YouTube clip linked below indicate that he didn't make it. If anyone out there has any word on where Dave is buried, please click on the "Contact Me" link on this page and gimme a heads-up.

In the meantime, here's a sampling of some of Dave's cleaner, "TV Approved" material from about 13 years ago during his appearance on "Comedy at Club 54". I'd like to find more, because while this is good, his filthy stuff was his funniest.
